Reaching for the starting block…again

Do you find yourself time after time reaching not for the stars but for the proverbial starting block !!! For example going to the gym or an exercise class, you think you are going great guns, everyweek smashing out your 20 minutes of cardio and some time on facebook whilst you sit on a weights machine (lol) – I am once again (it’s like ground hog day) back at the gym trying to get into my routine of going, but I’m finding that my life is just not fitting into a defined time or day to achieve a “routine”. I am permanently getting the starting block out again … “Right Gill, this week you will do 3 times on blah blah and blah day” then boom incomes a thing that I need to do and out goes the gym !!!

But I have to say that at least when I do get to the gym I actually do a bit of work. Don’t believe all those who tell you they work out for hours (secretly you think – then why do you still look like youve just staggered out of greggs (probably an allergy to wheat making said gym goer all bloaty,))

But Ive seen these people in the gym and guess what they may be at the gym 100% but their actual time working out is probably 20% and whats more they sit on the machine on their phones so you can’t even use it……… grrrrrrr (and breathe)…

It’s unfortunate that things happen to us that change our bodies, I’m not just talking about age but accidents and damage to bones, joints, illness, disease etc. It is a big job to get into your mind what you can do about these things, do you stop and think “well, I can’t do that, but I CAN do this?”

Then you work out a programme in the gym, woods, home etc. that keeps you physically active during a change period of life.

By the way I personally ask people if I can just do my little quick set of weights if they have been plonked on the machine for 10 minutes !!! They give you a “Drop Dead” look but you get to do your set. I mean people can sit on the floor to text or watch the latest you tube video on how to get fit !!! … I guarantee it will tell you to go and lift some weights or cycle a bit….

I used to run a slimming club at Maghull Health Studios and every week over 200 people would come to be weighed, do low impact exercise and listen to a talk by me on metabolic rate or the joy of broccoli etc and I have to say this was the most effective club that I have ever run. It was filled with ideas on good health and gentle education on why it’s not a great idea to buy the 6 pack of do-nuts. It was about great health, getting your blood pressure normalised and having fun learning about your body.

I wish I had understood more about the mindset then… I could have helped so many more people – being part of something with like minded people is crucial to well being, having a purpose and feeling the joy of knowing that you have made a difference (actually some really selfless people don’t need that feeling) but personally I just love it when someone gives me a little shout out for something – so why don’t we praise those who help us more?

You never know what sort of day they are actually having? They are there helping you but deep inside them they are thinking of throwing the starting blocks into the recycle bin (no clue which one, probably metal recycling at the tip). See how nothing is straight forward?

So it’s already late in the year and the Christmas parties will soon be in full swing then it will be the dreaded New Years Resolutions…

So I am going to get in early with that. Please don’t have any NYR’s because you really should be thinking about making changes today. Start now.

If you write down all the things that you will potentially start (oh yes this time you are going to stick to them all)

List them
Look at them

What can you actually start today to get you ahead of the game, make decisions to help yourself. Plan in a tiny bit of exercise, Plan in buying your vegetables, use the time cooking them as a meditation, get the idea.

Slow down your mind occasionally – just keep those starting blocks because it’s only human to have to start again sometimes, just don’t beat yourself up over it. Make a decision to make excellent choices.

However, if you are finding that your goals are never being achieved, that you start but then stop, if you get so far then self destruct, then it’s time to do things differently.
